Asylum seekers who have arrived in the UK by irregular means like small boats since 20th July 2023 will not have their claims examined. Under the Illegal Migration Act, they have been bailed and the Home Office will try to remove them from the UK.

Refugee charities have confirmed that the threat of deportation is causing huge distress and anxiety to vulnerable refugees. The Refugee Council has indicated that the uncertainty is increasing the risk of trafficking.

The first flights are predicted to take off in June, once the Safety of Rwanda bill becomes law.

However, it appears unlikely that Rwanda can accept more than 200 refugees at a time, even though the  UK government has already paid £240 million towards the project, and is expected to pay an extra £150 million over the next two years.
