The Guardian has questioned Rishi Sunak’s claim to have cleared the asylum backlog by the end of 2023. The latest figures show that appeals against refusals of asylum claims raise by more than 300% in the first three months of the year.
Lawyers have indicated that, in haste to meet the government’s targets, many of the decisions made were incorrect and were now being challenged.
In March, 86,500 asylum seekers were still waiting for an initial decision and, as more applications will have been made since then, the backlog still exists.
