The shadow home secretary, Yvette Cooper, has pledged to end the controversial Rwanda policy, where the government is trying to send refugees and asylum seekers arriving in the UK to the African country.

Speaking at the Labour Party conference,  she said she would work with France to prevent dangerous small boats crossing the Channel.

Previously, Ms Cooper has condemned the “deeply shameful” Rwanda project as  “unethical and extortionate”. She also asked the previous Home Secretary, Priti Patel, to provide details of safe routes for refugees.
