Keir Starmer’s refugee policy aims to beef up border security by ensuring direct access for top officials to the home secretary. Labour would scrap the Rwanda scheme, and use the money to employ more investigators, drawing together all those engaged in tracking down people smugglers.

The asylum claims of the many thousands waiting for a decision would also be resolved quickly, and Labour has pledged to work more closely with the French government to deter the criminal gangs.

However, there has been huge disappointment that the plans don’t include any new safe and legal routes for refugees, forcing many fleeing war and persecution to cross the channel in small boats.
