Priti Patel has announced that the first Rwanda deportation flight will take place on 14th June. So far, the scheme is not acting as a deterrent, as the numbers of migrants arriving in boats is continuing at the same rate.

100 people have now received notice of their deportation; Sudanese seem to be disproportionately represented, even though the UNHCR reckons that 2.3 million refugees have been displaced from South Sudan, and 4.3 million within the country need humanitarian assistance.

Meanwhile, former Conservative minister and current MP Jesse Norman has condemned the Rwanda plan as ‘ugly, likely to be counterproductive and of doubtful legality’.
