Sanghera, who grew up in Handsworth and attended the same school as Robert Jenrick, says that the Birmingham suburb comprises many different communities:
” According to Birmingham City Council, the ethnicity of Handsworth is 25 per cent Pakistani, 23 per cent Indian, 10 per cent Bangladeshi, 16 per cent Black African or Black Caribbean, 10 per cent mixed or other ethnic group and 9 per cent white,” he writes.
The author and Times columnist believes that Jenrick’s comments
“are a symptom of a new cult of ethno-nationalism, imported from the USA and supercharged by bad actors on social media. Suddenly, a great many people — including, bizarrely, Suella Braverman — are keen on the racist idea that you simply can’t be English and non-white”.
He attacks the idea that his relatives, with their university educations, white partners and professional jobs, are not British or integrated.
